Winter Skincare Essentials

Even though the winters here in Cape Town aren't nearly as harsh on your skin as the icy, dry Joburg winters, you still need to give your skin some extra pampering and love during the cold months.

Here's a list of my favourite winter skin savers.

1. Exfoliation

I've posted this recipe for my homemade exfoliator before, but its tried and tested and I really like it, so I'll post it again.

- 1 cup of mieliemeel
- 2 table spoons of salt
- 2 table spoons of honey
- 3 table spoons of Bio-Oil
- 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to aid circulation
- you can also ad some essential oils like lavender if you'd like

As soon as I step out of the shower, before I've even dried myself off, I lather myself in Bio-Oil to keep my skin super hydrated. It contains vitamins A & E and replenishes the natural oils in your skin.

If you feel like spoiling yourself, the O Mega Body Buff from Mama Mio is AMAZING! It smells great and leaves your skin feeling super soft and not dried out. It also contains extracts of caffeine and seaweed to aid in circulation and help with cellulite.

2. Sunscreen

I don't care if the sun is shining or if it is raining buckets outside, I use a sunscreen every single day. Even days when its raining outside and I'm in the office all day. I really like the Dermalogica Ultra Sensitive Face Block. It is light and non-oily and has a little sheer tint that means I can go without foundation if I really want to.

3. A Great Moisturiser

I recently started using Lamelle's Nourish Revitalise Light and my skin is loving it! I think I'll need a bit more moisture in winter though, so I might try the Revitalise Cream.

4. Lip Protection

My lips really suffer in winter. I absolutely swear by Bepanthen. It contains pro vitamin B5 and is actually a bum cream/nipple cream. It forms a breathable layer over your skin, protecting from the elements while intensely moisturising your lips. (It's also great for post-tattoo care)

5. All-Over Bodylotion

I like sticking to the basics. I also like a bodylotion that doesn't interfere with the smell of my perfume, which is why I use a mixture of Aqueous Cream and Bio-Oil. It offers moisture and protection and doesn't smell like fruit or chocolate or any other food group.

6. Endless Litres Of Water

This is probably the most important skin saver there is. In winter it becomes more of a mission cause it's cold and all you really want is a litre of hot chocolate and Horlicks. But if it tastes nice it's a bit easier. I drink tons of BuchuLife water. I have a huge crate of it in my house and I take one to bed with me every night and when I wake up I'm not dead, so: BuchuLife saves lives.
